Specialized solution for specialized needs
In my residency as the technology fellow at LATITUDE CHICAGO, I had the privilege of working on several projects with this forward-thinking printing organization dedicated to the arts and community enrichment. This particular project centered around designing a pair of specialty production tables tailored to the unique needs of their workshop and production space.
Key Design Features
Through comprehensive interviews with both the staff and clientele, we identified key requirements that informed the design. The primary challenge was to create tables that could handle large-scale prints and accommodate the largest paper cutter while maintaining flexibility and ease of movement within the workshop.
Size and Functionality: Each table was designed with a generous 8' x 10' tabletop, ensuring ample space for handling large prints and accommodating the sizable paper cutter used in production.
Mobility and Flexibility: To support the dynamic nature of the workspace, the tables are equipped with locking castors. This feature allows for easy repositioning and stability when needed, enhancing the versatility of the production area.
Workflow Optimization: The tables are topped with cutting mats, streamlining the workflow by providing a consistent and practical surface for cutting and assembling prints.
Modular Design: A standout feature is the tables' ability to lock together for collaborative tasks and unlock for transport. This modular approach facilitates efficient use of space and allows for easy maneuverability through building doors and around the workshop.
Material and Construction: We selected lightweight, cost-effective materials to ensure the tables are both durable and economical. The construction method was carefully chosen to balance strength with ease of handling.
Construction
This project not only met the functional requirements of LATITUDE but also enhanced their operational efficiency and adaptability. The design reflects a deep understanding of their needs and a commitment to accessibility and supporting their important work in the community.
